Life Changes Daily

Posted by Maridel Bowes on Friday, May 13, 2011 In : Spiritual guidance

We all know this... and we all conveniently forget it. We make plans (an excellent thing to do) and then imagine that they are going to follow the stream of our anticipation. Let me ask you this: How many days a week go as planned in your world? How many even resemble the plan? (If you don’t have children, a pet, or a vehicle and/or are not an entrepreneur you may be excused from reading this blog.) Do you recall that saying, “If you want to make the Goddess laugh, tell her your plans?”...

Been That, Done There

Posted by Maridel Bowes on Thursday, May 5, 2011 In : Spiritual counseling

Didn’t you get a wee bit worn out by the pronouncement, “Been there, done that!” Honestly, it was like an epidemic—people looking for the opportunity to pounce on a suggestion, story, or advice with this hale and hearty proclamation. In all fairness, it was also sometimes used to sympathize as well, acknowledging, “Hey, I know what you’re dealing with—I’ve been there (and done that). It was punchy, I have to admit, but it never caught on with my idiomatic-rejecting brain. (Aft...

Let Life Question You

I love good questions that cause me to think differently about my life and myself. Here are a few that have made an impact on me. Do you let life question you?

Life Changes...Us

Posted by Maridel Bowes on Wednesday, April 20, 2011 In : Women at midlife

When I came to Oregon last year, I “met someone.” Why do we say that, anyway? We “meet someone” all the time. Yet we also understand those mundane words to mean that something ordinarily so ordinary is, in fact, extraordinary. And so it is for me. A beautifully bald guy—quite a bit younger than me--is sprawled out on my couch, dozing. We’ve only known each other a few months, and though I haven’t told him so, he’s captivated me. I can tell he likes me a lot and we spend time t...

Betty White Doesn't Do Lunch

Posted by Maridel Bowes on Friday, April 1, 2011 In : Women at midlife

“As much as I love my friends, I wouldn't think of going out to lunch with a woman. I can't think of anything less interesting, except hen parties and showers — and I avoid them like the plague.” Thus spake Betty White in a not-so-recent edition of AARP magazine.

Obviously, Betty White never had lunch with Jill Kuykendall. (Or dozens of other women who will go unnamed only because my blog gets cranky when I go too far over its word limit) I chose Jill because she’s a lunch companion e...

Finding Safety at Safeway

Posted by Maridel Bowes on Wednesday, March 16, 2011 In : Kona Big Island

I was ready to blog about my car caper on The Big Island when a howling siren woke all sleeping and comatose persons for fifty miles – and scared the living lava out of the rest of us. It was ten o’clock at night. I knew what those sirens meant, but I chose to think that perhaps they were just executing a routine test of the equipment. Perhaps we would be required to perform a kind of “disaster drill” to show that we were in a state of readiness for impending calamity. Or maybe some p...

Big Island Adventure

Posted by Maridel Bowes on Thursday, March 10, 2011 In : Kona Big Island

You know about the TSA 3-1-1 rule right? You can take 3 ounce or smaller containers on board in 1 quart-size bags with a limit of 1 bag per traveler. Me too, I know about that! So WHY did everything shut down in the security lines when my carry on went through? Why did all the security personnel break out into a chorus of “Code 4!” as if they were staging a musical? And why did they then suddenly shout in unison, “All clear!” And most of all, why was it MY SUITCASE that was put back t...

Dear Ann Flanders

Posted by Maridel Bowes on Tuesday, March 8, 2011 In : Kona Big Island

Dear Ann Flanders,

I am leaving for Hawaii in three days on an extended vacation with my best friend, and am feeling quite depressed. I have noticed this pattern over time—that when I am really expanding myself, experiencing something that reflects the life I want, I sabotage myself with depression, “mistakes” or an illness. Have you ever heard of this? Is there hope for me?

P. S. Do you think it could just be the rain?

Dear Depressed,
At the risk of being unprofe...
